Bea a Reader
For several years once a month in the summer I gave away books on the farmer's market. We were part of care-a-van so there were other resources available for the community. People offered money at times. People donated books to me. I got rid of a good portion of my books from university. Those books I would stack up at the end of the semester and they were always taller than my daughter.
My son helped me most of the time and I was doing it mostly for him. We found a internship there he had all through high school. The botanical garden's revamped Green Corps was in the booth next to us one Saturday. People all came and acted as they thought everyone did. Everyone responded different to the books. People have a confidence with books. They think they know what they are.
Some could not believe they were all free. We just told people there was a one book minimum. Some people really needed to be convinced to take a book. These books all had lives of their own and people seemed to understand if not for them that life might end. Some people responded with bags and filled them up. I would help them and respond as if everyone did that.
My favorite people took books for their neighborhood children. Once someone caught the childhood book out of the corner of their eye and fell over out of breath. They wouldn't take the book, but we talked about it for several minutes.
