Generation Why?
What we could have done is so much more than what we did. The world had seemed to be going in a direction. People were proclaiming the end of history. In New York something is true as long as you can sustain it. Wolves have tailored sheep's clothes.
The end of the cold war is the first thing you want to know about us. We had seen brinkmanship, Chicken is not a game anyone with sense will play, but at some point the destructive capacity of people became greater than our planet. In 1980 we started to believe in miracles that didn't matter. There were two camps and ours was better financed.
Kennedy imagined the UN flag on the moon. That was one of the very first facts I researched. It has never fit the narrative of my life. We needed to win. Strength of presence has beaten strength of idea here since.
We walked on the moon alone in 1969. We amended the law to finally include clean water. Some points were easy. We created an agriculture exemption in 1972. They didn't think it would last 50 years and counting. We have chosen to not regulate agricultural waste my entire life.
They recognized the problem in 1972, created planning requirements with a 20-year horizon, funded them inadequately, watched them fail by 1980, and then took another 7 years to try a different (still voluntary) approach. We know how E. coli moves through our country. Being shit on is the third rail of our generation
.
We don't really debate the names of generations. I always thought they had something to say. Like the first acid test arriving on meteors; seems the gang is all there. Life more than a billion years older we think today. Tomorrow we will know more of the past. Unfolding with the future.
X marked a spot, but we lived in different worlds. We no longer ducked and covered because there was nowhere to hide from our intruders. The classroom now a conventional battle field. We are going in the wrong direction and in my generation we all know why?
The fact that Tupac was my age is the second thing you want to know about us. Thug life is about a lack of institutional money that relied upon a civil society much like the one that developed in eastern Europe under the communists. Blood money and the captive mind. The fashion. A hot war about nothing too quickly lost.
One side was better financed. Bad Boy played house while Death Row runs the street, but both were still working someone else's land. Tupac should be my age.
Lot of people should be my age. The third thing is there was death all around. AIDS was bad but what was really evil was our response to it. People acted up and we moved on. We lost our mentors.
Death decides too much in the world. We leave ourselves exposed because we find things difficult. Yet many forty hours of work could easily be done in thirty two. There are too many easy jobs. Too much value is created with no future. We don't price the sustainable correctly. Simple solutions. The physics not complicated.
Before we walked on the moon, the petroleum industry understood well the simple reality of climate change. We choose to leave the solution for later when it will be more difficult and more expensive. We are the future's problem. Someone who understands this is what we need to lead. I love to follow, but we are losing to morons.
